STATEMENT BY MAYOR OF LIMA, JORGE MUÑOZ WELLS, REGARDING NEW LEADERSHIP ROLE ON BOARD OF THE GLOBAL COVENANT OF MAYORS FOR CLIMATE & ENERGY
Cartagena, Colombia, 25 September 2019 – Mayor Jorge Muñoz Wells of Lima, Peru was appointed to represent Latin America and the Caribbean for C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group on the Board of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (GCoM), the largest global alliance for city climate leadership, built upon the commitment of over 10,000 cities and local governments.
The appointment of the Board Mayor was announced during a Regional Dialogue hosted by the European Union’s International Urban Cooperation (IUC) Programme in Cartagena, Colombia. The event was designed to provide cities with an opportunity to share ideas, lessons learned and good practices on financing urban development and climate actions.
This new role will see Muñoz becoming the voice of the 400+ Latin American and Caribbean signatory cities that form GCoM and are committed to working towards a resilient and low-emission society. As the representative of C40 Cities, Mayor Muñoz will also represent the group of 94 of the world’s megacities leading the way towards a healthier and more sustainable future.

During his term until 2021, Muñoz will not only support the City of Lima in delivering its ambitious Climate Action Plan, but will also represent and demonstrate the critical leadership of Latin American cities in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
Mayor Muñoz is delighted to accept this important role representing cities from the entire region – consisting of over 161 Million people – and is committed to making the maximum effort to lead appropriate actions for combatting climate change.
